Suggested Travel Itineraries

Australia is a big country with vast distances to cover between its major cities, tourist centres and the famous natural attractions visitors come to see. To see it all you would need between six months to a year. Due to both financial and time restraints, not everyone has the luxury of travelling until they have seen everything they want to see, so as well as offering general advice and tips, we have put together a number of itineraries designed to help you see as many key attractions as possible for as little cost as possible within a range of time frames.

Note: These are suggested itineraries only and are not associated with an organised tour sold by a third party tour operator.

One Week

If you have only one week available, we suggest you split your time between Sydney and Melbourne. Both cities have full day coach tours that visit wildlife parks close to the city so you can view kangaroos, koalas, emus etc. and see a bit of rural Australia on the way.

Two to Three Weeks

Two weeks is better than one if you are looking to see what Australia has to offer the international traveller, but still not enough if you want to cover a lot of territory. It will allow you to include up to four major destinations in your visit with a few days in each.

One to Two Months

Having four weeks to travel Australia opens up the possibilities considerably over shorter visits or travel times. You can either have a taste of a little bit of everything Australia has to offer on a tight budget, visiting all mainland states and territories; focus on a few destinations or regions and explore them in detail; or settle for something in between.

Three Months or More

Three months is an adequate minimum amount of time to travel to all parts of Australia and savour all the various regions of the country have to offer. The first itinerary on this page is designed for those on a tight budget, and incorporates both rail and air travel. The second itinerary is a self drive tour of Australia that follows Highway One around the nation's perimeter. Both itineraries can be easily expanded to allow more time to explore the capital cities and regions passed along the way in greater detail, or visit other localities off the planned route.
