Living Desert Flora and Fauna Sanctuary



Living Desert State Parks flora and fauna sanctuary is set amongst the tranquillity of the gullies and rocky outcrops. With a large biodiversity of native plants and animals, the sanctuary contains an animal viewing area, where youre sure to see wallabies, red kangaroos and wedge tail eagles. Or visit the an arboretum of endemic plants, or walk amongst numerous native species such as Sturt Pea, wattles and many more. The Flora and Fauna Sanctuary comprises an area of 180 hectares bordered by an electric predator-proof fence. This is truly a sanctuary with a difference; the one and a half kilometre cultural trail within the sanctuary takes you on a journey through the Arboretum and Sturt Pea Wildflower display, Aboriginal attractions display past culture and recent contemporary story pole artwork.

The Living Desert Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, 6 km from town, is where the Broken Hill Sculptures sit on top of hills in the desert reserve. The topography, scenery and views surrounding the unique Living Desert sculpture park are breathtaking and can be experience by taking the numerous walking trails. The sculptures are best visited around sunset and ideal to photograph at that time.

Situated on a majestic hilltop is the Sculpture Symposium. The Sculptures comprise 12 sandstone artworks which highlight the skyline, all with a story to tell. Located on a majestic hilltop within the centre of the reserve, the sculptures were completed in 1993 by artists from around the world. The Taking three hours to complete, the parks paths wind through the stunning sculpture symposium and the peaceful flora and fauna sanctuary, while the cultural walk trail educates on local Aboriginal heritage and importance of the preservation of our environment. It is recommended to have plenty of water at hand during the warmer months as it can be thirsty work trekking around the area. It can also be extremely cold at during winter.



Living Desert State Parks flora and fauna sanctuary is an easy drive from the nearby towns of Broken Hill and Silverton NSW. Take Kaolin Street (Nine Mile Road) and exit on the second right hand turnoff. An entrance fee per person is required and payable at the pay bay located on the Living Desert entrance road. Parking is available at the picnic area or the car park at the top of the sculpture hill. Please follow the signs.

Summer months (Dec-Feb): 6.00am to approx. half hour after sunset.
Remaining months: 8.30am to approx. half hour after sunset.
