Canyons and Gorges: Queensland

Carnarvon Gorge

Carnarvon Gorge is an oasis in the semi-arid heart of Queensland. Here, in the Carnarvon Gorge Section of Carnarvon National Park, towering white sandstone cliffs form a spectacular steep-sided gorge with narrow, vibrantly coloured and lush side gorges. Boulder-strewn Carnarvon Creek winds through the gorge. Remnant rainforest flourishes in the sheltered side gorges while endemic Livistona nitida cabbage tree palms, ancient cycads, ferns, flowering shrubs and gums trees line the meandering main gorge. Grassy open forest grows on the cliff-tops.

Cobbold Gorge

Driving southwest from Undara in Queensland you can find a mostly unknown, spectacular and beautiful place - Cobbold Gorge (400km west of Cairns). The Gorge is only open during winter months and can be reached only by 4WD. Cobbold Gorge is located on a privately owned cattle property and can only be accessed on a guided tour. This gorge is extremely narrow, closing to a mere two meters wide in places, with spectacular 30 meter cliffs on either side. The overall length of the gorge is about six kilometres and consists of a series of water-holes and rock falls, however only the last 500 meters is accessible by flat bottom boat.

Finch Hatton Gorge

This gorge is located within the Eungella National Park near Mirani, Queensland, and is a spectacular piece of tropical rainforest, interspersed by pristine rock pools and waterfalls. The Gorge is one of the most popular fresh water swimming holes in the region with locals and visitors alike. Imagine swimming in a clear rock pool as water cascades down from tall boulders and large rainforest trees tower above. Finch Hatton Gorge is also home to some very rare and unique flora and fauna such as the rare gastric brooding frog and the orange sided skink.

Mossman Gorge

Mossman Gorge is one of the most visited spots in the Wet Tropics. Part of the Daintree National Park, the gorge is the traditional home of the Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal people. Take a cultural tour and visit the art gallery at Mossman Gorge to learn more about their unique Rainforest Aboriginal culture. There is a 2.4km (1.5 mile) self-guided walking track and day use area in the national park. If you go near the water, be careful - the rocks are often slippery and the water is fast flowing. Take the signposted turnoff in Mossman and drive 6km (3.7 miles) to the Gorge.

Lawn Hill (Boodjamulla)

The emerald waters and lush vegetation of Lawn Hill Gorge form a beautiful oasis in the outback, attracting abundant wildlife and offering exceptional views, walks, canoeing and cultural sites. Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park is one of Queenslands most scenic national parks. Situated within the remote north-west highlands of Queensland, the park features spectacular gorge country, sandstone ranges and World Heritage fossils. Lawn Hill Creek and the Gregory and OShanassy Rivers flow all year round, providing a stark contrast to the dry, parched landscape during the dry season
