Canyons and Gorges: South Australia

Alligator Gorge

A popular destination for bushwalking and camping, Mount Remarkable National Parks dramatic gorges, walking trails and diverse wildlife is just the beginning of its appeal. A three hour drive north of Adelaide, Mount Remarkable is a major geographical feature of the Southern Flinders Ranges. At 960 metres, it towers above the small town of Melrose. Mount Remarkable lives up to its name, with an abundance of rock formations, deep gorges and dramatic scenery. Alligator Gorge, on the eastern side of Mount Remarkable National Park, includes deep gashes in red-brown quartzite rocks, forming gorges rich in colour while on the western side.

Buckaringa Gorge

Buckaringa is part of a folded sedimentary sequence of sandstones, siltstones and shales. While the sandstones are relatively resistant to erosion, both the siltstone and shales are weak and easily eroded. The sandstone fold structures form the present pattern of ridges and ranges. Buckaringa and Middle Gorges are formed where streams have cut through the ridge at right angles to the strata, forming steep-sided gorges with numerous crevices, caves and fallen boulder piles. The remainder of the Buckaringa Sanctuary consists of ridges and bedrock plains carrying shallow soils and rock debris, with deeper soils on the flatter alluvial areas away from the rock outcrops.

Burra Gorge

Mighty river red gums feature in this extensive reserve, 26 km south from Burra. After winter rains the creek environment is a lush habitat for birds and other wildlife. Its a good spot for relaxed bush camping and nature walks, yet still within easy reach of Burras attractions. Bring your own gas/fuel stove. The gorge is on the Heysen Trail. It is also known as Worlds End.

Gawler Ranges

Gawler Ranges National Park, in the northern region of Eyre Peninsula, contains some of the oldest rock formations on the planet. The remains of a massive formations found here are just a small part of whats known to geologists and the mining companies as the Gawler Craton. With endless tracks providing endless vistas of an ancient volcanic madness its little wonder that more and more four-wheel drive enthusiasts are making their way into the Gawler Ranges National Park.

Gammon Ranges

A small, isolated community in the rugged northern section of the Flinders Ranges, Arkaroola is located on a privately owned property that has been opened up as the hub of a wilderness sanctuary. 20 km west of Arkaroola is Gammon Ranges National Park, a rugged and remote park in the North Flinders Ranges. The parks deep gorges and chasms, towering ranges, tree-lined creeks and freshwater springs are havens for many rare and endangered plants and animals.
