PARABURDOO, WESTERN AUSTRALIA


A mining town housing workers of Hamersley Iron who work the iron ore deposits of the area. Paraburdoo, along with Pannawonica, has the distinction of having the highest maximum temperatures of any town in Australia.
Location: 1,536 km north of Perth via the
North West Coastal Highway; 80 km from Tom Price.
Origin of name
: comes from the Aboriginal name "Oeruu-Pardu" meaning 'meat and feathers'. There has always been an abundance of white cockatoos in the area, to which the name refers.
Brief history: The town was established in 1970 by Hamersley Iron to service its local iron ore mining operations. Iron ore is railed to Dampier and shipped to Japan, Europe, China and other Asian countries.
