Aboriginal art and occupation sites
Escarpments, gorges, and rock outliers across Australia hold one of the world's greatest concentrations of ancient rock art, as well as sites which give evidence to their occupation of one of the oldest surviving cultures in the world.
These sites, estimated to range in age from 30,000 years to the recent present, constitute one of the longest historical records of any group of people in the world. The rock art sites of at places like Kakadu in the Northern Terrirtory, are recognised internationally for their cultural value and are one of the reasons that places like Kakadu have been inscribed on the United Nations list of World Heritage properties.
