History

The town was established in 1970 by Hamersley Iron to service its local iron ore mining operations. Iron ore is railed to Dampier and shipped to Japan, Europe, China and other Asian countries.

Origin of name: comes from the Aboriginal name "Oeruu-Pardu" meaning 'meat and feathers'. There has always been an abundance of white cockatoos in the area, to which the name refers.
