Food and wine trails

Swan Valley Food and Wine Trail: on the outskirts of the city of Perth and one of Australian's longest established wine regions, the Swan Valley is noted for its Verdelho, Shiraz and Cabernet, all of which thrive in the region’s warm, dry summers. They regularly win medals at wine shows around the world. Houghtons, one of the valley's oldest wineries, is home to Australia’s most famous White Burgundy. More >>

Margaret River Wine Region: Once a quiet surfing spot and service town to a prosperous farming community, Margaret River is these days the ultimate smorgasbord of good food, fine wine and spectacular coastal scenery. Margaret River emerged as WA's leading and one of Australia's top red wine producing regions in the 1980s, and as a result, is one of WA's most well known destinations. Margaret River is also an ideal base from which to explore the region's coastal scenery. More >>

Great Southern Wine and Food Trail: located within a one-hour drive of Albany are five dynamic sub-wine regions which collectively form the Great Southern Wine Region. Their high quality wines have forged an enviable reputation internationally of late. Teamed with these fine wines are a diverse range of local produce - berries, olive oils, cherries and asparagus are seasonal favourites. The hinterland provides such tastes as fresh lamb, beef, venison and poultry, together with freshwater delicacies such as trout, marron (freshwater crayfish) and yabbies. The bounty of the sea adds to the gourmet experience. More >>

Unique gourmet produce

Tomato Fig Chutney
Anyone who calls their gourmet food range 'A Little Bit On The Side' has to have a wicked sense of humour plus a bit of creativity thrown in for good measure. The Toffee Factory of Denmark in WA clearly has both - and they've even managed to bottle it! My favourite 'bit on the side' is a totally delicious Tomato Fig Chutney. This tangy, fruity chutney is magic with English-style pork pie, though I'm told it's great with cold meats and with cheese as part of a Ploughman's Lunch. The Toffee Factory has a coffee shop where samples of their toffees, brittles, preserves, salsas, tapenades and sauces are available to try and buy. They also brew a mean range of ciders, all made on the premises.
Location: The Toffee Factory, South Coast Highway, William Bay, Denmark, WA

Leeuwin Spring Water

As a kid growing up in Perth I used to love going on holidays with my family to WA's south west corner. There we'd go beachcombing, swimming, walking through the limestone caves, but best of all we'd climb Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, down on the far south eastern tip of Australia. Nearby there is a calcified 19th century waterwheel that used to be powered by the most beautiful tasting water from a natural spring. I loved getting out my water bottle and filling it up from the old wooden water channel through which the water flowed to the wheel.
In recent years someone has had the bright idea of bottling this wonderful tasting water, and it is now available in either 375ml or 750ml premium glass bottles that make unique souvenirs of a trip to this delightful corner of the lucky country. For those who love the water but aren't too worried about the packaging, it's also available in 1.5 litre Pet bottles and 10 and 15 litre packs for camping, home or office.

Forbidden Fruits

Away from the more traditional wineries of the Margaret River region is a winery that uses fruit rather than grapes to make its wines. The Berry Farm produces a high class range of fruit wines that are sweet, but definitely not sickly. Take for example the Forbidden Fruits range, a series of three elegantly bottled dessert wines that are a refreshing alternative to the more traditional after dinner fare of ports, liqueurs and sherries. The Forbidden Fruits collection consists of a Mango Dessert Wine, a Sweet Berry Red Dessert Wine and a Passionfruit Dessert Wine. Each is unique in flavour and beautifully balanced to enhance the individual flavour of the fruit from which it is made.
Location: The Berry Farm, 43 Bessell Rd, Margaret River, WA

Your Experiences ...

Has there been a gourmet food supplier you have visited whose produce you have found to be totally yummy? If so, we'd love to hear from you. Tell us a little about the product and the place when you came across it. You can either write the review yourself (feel free to send pics of the product), or simply advise us of the product and its manufacturer and we'll follow it up ourselves.
Our preference is for unique products that are not available at regular outlets across Australia, particularly those using ingredients that are unique to the locality where they are made.
