New South Wales: Far West and Outback

Key Attractions

Broken Hill: Broken Hill, near the South Australian border, is one of Australia's most unlikely tourist meccas. It's still very much a dusty working town, stuck out in the middle of nowhere on the site of the richest deposits of silver, lead and zinc the world has ever seen. The mines, though still worked, have seen better days, and the town's buildings and streets are reminiscent of the Old West in a John Wayne movie, yet the place is buzzing.

Corner Country: The point where the boundary lines of the states of Queensland, South Australia, and New South Wales meet, Cameron's Corner is the place to go if you really want to experience being out in the middle of nowhere. The Cameron Corner Store manages a golf course where you can tee off in New South Wales, hit the ball over Queensland and it will land in South Australia. The noted Dingo Fence passes through Cameron's Corner along the New South Wales border.

Mungo National Park: Mungo Lake, in a remote corner of south-western New South Wales, is the focal point of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage area. Its most recognisable image is The Walls of China, on the shore of Lake Mungo, a fascinating formation of layers of sand, salt and clay that have eroded into surprising shapes over thousands of years. Buried here in thick layers of sand and clay are the tell-tale signs of how the climate, waters and landforms have changed over the last 100,000 years and more. And for at least 45,000 years humans have shared that past.

Visiting The Region: The Facts

How to Get There: by road west from Sydney via Great Western Highway through the Blue Mountains. The major towns and cities of the region are connected to Sydney by rail. The lines are serviced by XPT trains. The Indian Pacific (Sydney to Perth) train stops at Broken Hill.

Best Time To Go: being a semi arid region, summers are hot, and winters can be quite cold, particularly at nights. Spring (Sept-Nov) and Autumn (Mar-May) are the most comfortable times to travel through the region.
