A former gold mine town that bust into life in 1852 when gold was discovered 3 km east of the present town. Avoca is now a local centre for the pastoral and agricultural activity of the area and the Central Highlands gateway to the Pyrenees wine region. Location: 170 km north of Melbourne, 70 km north west of Ballarat. Points of Interest: Pyrenees Range; Mt Cole National Park; Avoca River; Wimmera River; Bet Bet Creek; various historic buildings. |
