One of Victoria's older towns, it services the dairying, fruit growing and brown coal mining industries of the area. Captain Bacchus settled here in 1839, his house still exists in Manor Street. The town was a staging post for the Cobb & Co coaches in 1839. The town's Holy Trinity Church (1877) is where Andrew Scott often read the lesson before turning to bushranging under the name Captain Moonlight.
