An attractive town situated in a prosperous agricultural area that produces vegetables for the nearby Brisbane markets (notably carrots and potatoes), cereal crops, beef, pork and timber. Known as 'The Heart of the Fassifern', Boonah is also the administrative centre for the local shire.

Where is it?: Queensland: South East. Boonah is 84 km south-west of Brisbane

Things to see and do:

Boonah's airfield is the centre for many forms of aviation activity. Its uncluttered skies and fabulous scenery make Boonah a popular location for flying everything from gliders and ultralights to Cessnas and hot air balloons.

Surrounding area:

Boonah is a gateway to the Scenic Rim, an arc of spectacular mountains lying from south of Beaudesert to the area south west of Ipswich, the Scenic Rim is situated within Australia's Green Cauldron which stretches from Byron Bay to the Gold Coast and west towards the Great Dividing Range. The sheer size of the caldera is breathtaking and shelters a huge diversity of rare flora and fauna, and subtropical rainforests within the rim of mountain ranges. There are some magnificent national parks in the region for the avid nature lover, two of which are World Heritage listed, the most visited being Main Range National Park (Mt Mitchell, Mt Cordeaux, Cunninghams Gap, Queen Mary Falls) and Moogerah Peaks National Park (includes a number of volcanic peaks and rocky cliffs, Mt. Moon, Mt. Edwards, Mt. Greville, Lake Moogerah).


Brief history: Originally known, rather un-romantically, as the Goolman Division Board, the name was changed in 1937. Boonah, an Anglicised version of the word 'buna', that is said to have been the Aboriginal name of the bloodwood tree. The town was established in 1882 as a service centre for the surrounding farms.
