COOROW, WESTERN AUSTRALIA

A town in the Midlands Wheatbelt area between Carnamah and Moora.
Location: 262 km north of Perth on the Midlands Road.
Origin of name
: the name is believed to be derived from the Aboriginal name of a nearby spring, first recorded in 1872 at the suggestion of explorer and later Premier of WA,
Sir John Forrest. The word is derived from "Curro", an Aboriginal word for a variety of Portulacca, however another source gives it as "many mists".
Brief history: in 1852, the first white settlers, William and Sara Long, arrived in the district to raised sheep and horses. The horses were shipped to Singapore where they were used by the British forces. The townsite of Cowan was gazetted in 1893. The railway arrived in 1894 and the Midland Railway Company established farms along the line which they sold as going concerns in 1912.
