KERANG, VICTORIA


Service town for the local pastoral, fruit growing and mix farming insustries of the area. The town is also a centre for duck shooting as it lies at the saouthern end of a chain of 57 lakes and marshes. The Australian Tractor Pull Championships held at nearby Quambatook, 42 km away, every Easter Sunday.
Location: 299 km north west of Melbourne; 60 km from Swan Hill; 30 km from the
Murray River.
Origin of name
: of Aborigin origin, meaning cockatoo, or parasite or moon. The latter seems to be the most likely.
Brief history:
Major Sir Thomas Mitchell explored the Loddon River in 1836. the first settler was a graduate from trinity College, Dublin, Woodfull Patchell, who took up land near Kerang in 1857, and was the first to pump water from the Murray to irrigate his crops. The Kerang-Koondrook tramway (using Victorian rail gauge) was established to bring produce from the NSW Riverina to the river port of Kerang.
