MAITLAND, SOUTH AUSTRALIA


A regional centre in the middle of Yorke peninsula which services a rich farming district that produces wheat, barley, wool and beef cattle.
Location: 168 km north west of Adelaide; 24 km west of Ardrossan; 164 km south of Port Pirie.
Origin of name
: named in 1872 on its proclamation after Lady Jean Maitland, the wife of the First Lord Kilkerran in Scotland, by the Governor of South Australia at the time,
Sir James Fergusson. It was thus named as it was in the Hundred of Kilkerran. The Aboriginal name for the area was 'madu witu' which refers to the white flint common in the area.
Brief history: The town was laid out in the same style as Adelaide in a series of radiating squares.
