MURRAYVILLE, VICTORIA Located in the heart of the Mallee Highway agricultural corridor, its treasure is an underground basin which produces water of virtual rain quality - a supply that is essential for irrigation-dependent potato and other small crop farmers of the area. Location: 24 km east of the South Australian border on the Mallee Highway. Origin of name: the town is named after John Murray, the Premier of Victoria at the time of the town's establishment. Brief history: the pioneer white settlers first lived in tents then erected shelters from whatever they could find, often sheds with iron roofs and walls of local pine. A giant Mallee stump on display in the town is a reminder of the difficulties faced by selectors who began to move into the area and clear the scrub away for farming soon after their arrival in 1909.
