NEW NORCIA, WESTERN AUSTRALIA Often incorrectly called a town, New Norcia has never been officially gazetted as such, as it is a Benedictine Mission. Origin of name: recalls Norcia, a town in the Umbria province of northern Italy, which was the birthplace of St Benedict, founder of the Benedictine order. The mission was thus named by a founding brother, Dom Rosendo Salvado. Brief history: The mission was built on land purchased by the Benedictine brotherhood in 1846.
