RENNER SPRINGS, NORTHERN TERRITORY

A tiny settlement and stopover on the Stuart Highway in the heart of Barkly Tablelands cattle country. The springs were named after Dr. Frederick Emil Renner (d. 1893) who was dispensing medical advice to the team working on the Overland Telegraph Line when they passed through the area in 1872.
Places of interest: Renner Springs; Helen Springs; Mt. Willieray; Churchill's Head Rock (78 km south), a rock which looks vaguely like a profile of British wartime Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill; Attack Creek (11 km south; on his first attempt to cross Australia, John McDouall Stuart was attacked by hostile Aborigines on 25th June 1860); East Renner Springs rodeo and race track.
Location: 662 km north of Alice Springs; 820 km south of Darwin; 161 km north of Tennant Creek.
