TANAMI, NORTHERN TERRITORY An isolated, tiny settlement in the middle of the harsh Tanami Desert. Tanami was the last frontier in the Northern Territory, having not been explored by Europeans until the 20th century. In 1900 Alan Davidson found gold in the area and a small mining town was established which, by 1908, was populated by over 200 fossickers. The conditions were harsh and the local Aborigines unfriendly. In 1932 more gold was found at The Granites (94 km south) but again the lack of water was a major problem. Location: 634 km north west of Alice Springs on a dirt road through the Tanami Desert. |
