A small town north of Traralgon. The town holds the Festival of Roses each November. Location: 15 km north of Traralgon. Origin of name: named after a district in NSW and is aboriginal for "place near water", which is not a good description for Toongabbie as it has littler fresh water. Brief history: Toongabbie was settled in the 1860s as the final staging place before Walhalla. Ned Stringer, who discovered gold at Stringer's Creek, died at Toongabbie on his way back to Walhalla after registering his claim at Sale. Built features: Mechanics Institute; Ned Stringer's Memorial Gallery. |
