Whroo, which lies within Rushworth State Forest 7 km south of the Rushworth, was the township created to house the miners of the Balaclava open cut quartz reef gold mine. Whroo once had over 130 buildings, today it is a ghost town largely reclaimed by the bush. the mine owner's homestead to the south. A row of sugar gums marks the site of the mechanics' institute where balls were held on moonlit nights. A walking track system leads through the town's remains and various mine workings, taking in the Whroo Cemetery. Located on a lonely hillside and containing some 340 graves, the cemetery reflects the harshness of life on the goldfields last century. Visitors to Whroo (pronounced roo) can still see the 25 metre deep open cut gold mine on the hill. Points of Interest: Whroo Historic Reserve |
