| Southern Tasmania: Directory |
About the region: The South of Tasmania is known for its Georgian era villages, majestic mountains, waterways, unique fauna and flora, plus artworks and crafts. It is home to Australia's largest collection of convict era relics, including the notorious Port Arthur and Maria Island Penal Settlements. The regional centre in southern Tasmania is the state's capital, Hobart, Australia's southern most capital and Tasmania's largest city. Hobart straddles the Derwent River, with Mount Wellington as a magnificent backdrop. Boasting one of the deepest harbours in the world, Hobart combines the charming old and the exciting new against a backdrop of mountain and sea. The city is steeped in history, and is Australia's second oldest settlement. Hobart's historical centre is Salamanca Place, complete with cobble stone lanes, sandstone warehouses, arts and crafts shops, cafes and restaurants. Just 20 minutes from the city is Mt. Wellington. Its 1,234m peak provides panoramic views of the city and estuary beyond.
