Weymouth is a small township in northern Tasmania on the Pipers River opposite Bellingham. It has a very small permanent population; however, it attracts many visitors during the summer months. Weymouth has a beach, a tennis court and a seasonal shop. The estuary at Weymouth (Pipers River) has a strong tidal inflow and outflow and is popular for recreational angling, swimming and skiing. Species such as Kingfish, sharks and flathead both sand and king are caught here.

Where Is it?

Weymouth is 50 km north of Launceston.

The local surfers reckon this coastline is amongst the best around, and a quick check of the surf web sites seems to support this view. Nearby Lulworth has a good beach which is very popular with families and is a great spot for kids and pets. Tam O’Shanter is another popular destination for surfers and anglers alike. Fishing here too can be sensational, particularly during the warmer months of the year.

Bridport, some 20 minutes drive away, is home to what many consider to be Australia’s No. one Public Golf Course, Barnbougle Dunes, (also rated World's No. 7). There is also a Golf Course at Lulworth 5 minutes away. Pipers Brook boutique wine regions is close at hand.

Offshore from Weymouth is Tenth Island, which is home to a seal colony and also the hunting grounds for many great white sharks. A local woman was taken by a shark some years ago whilst scuba diving in this area, so it pays to be cautious. It is a very popular spot for fishing and also kayaking.

Fossicking

The area has yielded fine-grained quartz pebbles, petrified wood and some agates and chalcedony. This area is surrounded by private property. Public access to the foreshore can be obtained from public roads at the eastern end of the fossicking area. Information: Ph. Parks & Wildlife (03) 6357 2108.
