Being strapped into a land-yacht is said to be an awesome feeling. Land yachts, as they are known, look like catamarans on wheels but locals say the mast and sail is where the resemblance ends. These vehicles have three wheels and a horizontal seat for the driver, who steers it with foot controls and a hand-held sheet rope for the sail. At their fastest, these contraptions can reach speeds of up to 140km/h.
Land yachts come in different classes, depending on your skill level. The standard size is about 2m long and 3m high and is able to propel you along at 90km/h. The bigger the land yacht, the faster you go, and the more you’ll need your protective gear. Those in the bigger class vehicles wear hard hats, gloves, boots and overalls for safety, as well as to combat the salt and wind. Anyone is free to give the sport a go. Land sailing is open to all ages, with children as young as eight to people as old as 70 taking part, and devotees say the sport only takes a few minutes to master.
The Australian Blokart Association (ABA) was formed in 2009 to promote and develop the sport of blokart sailing in the community by providing family orientated fun events in a safe environment. The ABA aims to encourage membership of clubs, participation and interaction among all blokart sailors. The ABA is a member of the International Blokart Racing Association (IBRA).
