South West of Western Australia Directory

About the region: The south western corner of Western Australia is rich with rolling farmlands, boutique wineries, winding rivers, spectacular cave systems, magnificent forests and great coastlines. Margaret River, famous for its wineries and surf beaches, is an ideal base to discover the coastal scenery as well as to go wine tasting, surfing and caving. Yallingup offers great surfing and is also the home to the first of numerous underground caves, part of the cave system which works its way south to Augusta. These fascinating limestone caves include Lake Cave, Mammoth Cave and Jewel Cave with magnificent limestone formations and beautiful colours.
Forests of huge karri trees are located in the region's souther east. There are many scenic drives through karri country, which are covered in wildflowers during the spring. These southern forests also include the Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk and the Ancient Empire. The Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk was set up to protect the Tingle Forest and provides a unique opportunity to view the forest floor and also the canopy tree-tops along the gradually elevated walkway.

Journeys

Visiting The Region: The Facts

How To Get There: take either Albany Highway or Kwinana Freeway south from Perth to Bunbury via Mandurah or Pinjarra. The South West Highway from Bunbury is an inland option, which passes through karri forests, orchards (Donnybrook and Bridgetown), rolling hills and timber milling towns (Manjimup). Bussell Highway is the more popular route and takes in the coastal holiday towns of Busselton, Eagle Bay, Dunsborough and Meelup on Geographe Bay.

The Best Time To Visit: The region has a Mediterranean climate and can visited at all ti8mes of the year. Summer can be hot, but are generally cooler than Perth because of their southerly aspect and the influences of weather patterns in those latitudes.
