Wee Jasper


Wee Jasper (82 km north west) is a small picturesque village of about 100 people in a pretty valley at the foot of the Brindabella Ranges, on the backwaters of Burrinjuck Dam. Wee Jasper has five nature reserves available for camping and recreation. Walking, canoeing, swimming, fishing and caving can all be enjoyed. Trout fishing is best from October to February.

Fossils, including members of the Acanthothoracid placoderm fish family Weejasperaspididae, the primitive placoderm Brindabellaspis stensioi and the prehistoric lungfish, Dipnorhynchus cathlesae, have been found in the area.



Carey's Cave (6 km north-west of wee Jasper) features some striking and very colourful limestone formations within seven principal chambers. There are stalagmites, stalactites, columns, flowstone and helictites. Two different afternoon guided tours are available on weekends and public holidays.

Burrinjuck Dam (104 km drive from Wee Jasper) is a major gated concrete-walled gravity dam with three spillways across the Murrumbidgee River. Commenced in 1907, its construction was completed in 1928, and upgraded in 1957 and 1994, this major ungated dam is located approximately 60 kilometres south-west of Yass. The dam was built for town water supplies, river flows and domestic requirements, irrigated agriculture, industry, flood mitigation and environmental flows. The Yass and Goodradigbee rivers also flow into the dam. Together with releases from Blowering Dam, on the Murrumbidgee River, Burrinjuck Dam also provides a regulated flow of water for the Coleambally and Murrumbidgee Irrigation Areas.

The dam divides the upper and lower catchment of the Murrumbidgee River and is the headwater storage for the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. When full Burrinjuck Lake has a surface area of 5500 ha and 645 km of shoreline and holds 1 025 000 megalitres of water (2.5 times that of Sydney Harbour).

Lake Burrinjuckis open to all forms of boating. Several boat ramps are provided around the lake. Camping is permitted at Burrinjuck State Forrest Park and Wee Jasper Camping Reserve at the backwaters of the lake. lake Burrinjuck is a popular fishing spot. Murray Cod, Macquarie Perch, Golden Perch, Silver Perch, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Atlantic Salmon, Redfin, Eel-Tailed Catfish and Carp are present. Murray Cod, Golden Perch, Silver Perch, Rainbow Trout and Atlantic Salmon are swtocked fish. Accomodation is provided at various locations around the lake.
