Unley
The affluent inner-southern suburb of Unley lies within the City of Unley. This tightly-held southern suburbs enclave with a cache of lovely old Adelaide homes. All the requisite shops, cafes and services line King William and Unley Roads, just a few minutes from the CBD.
Unley Shopping Centre on Unley Road is a local mall with all the shop-and-service trimmings. Adelaide s only tram line passes across the northwestern corner of Unley. Unley s own Sturt Football Club the Double Blues plays at the Unley Oval. Unley boasts a classic collection of Adelaide homes: immaculate stone-fronted Victorian villas with three or more bedrooms and generous gardens. Upsized townhouses appear here and there, but it s the consistency of Unley s heritage housing that s the real appeal.
Unley is the family name of the wife of Thomas Whistler, owner of land in Unley which was laid out around 1857. Prior to British settlement, Unley was home to the indigenous peoples of the Kaurna tribe. Settlement by migrants commenced in the mid-19th century with arrivals predominantly from United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and to a small extent German speaking lands. At this time a small number of other ethnic groups also appeared. The land was cleared of native forest to farm sheep and cattle and to plant vineyards and orchards. Since then, it has developed into a commercial hub, just south of Adelaide's city centre. The suburb also has a significant Greek Australian population.
