Ngukurr

Ngukurr is an Aboriginal Community built on hilly ground alongside the Roper River in South East Arnhem Land. Ngukurr people are culturally strong with deep connections to their country and the dreamings. The landscape is prolific Top End growth, billabongs and wetlands.

The township supports a thriving arts community, the Ngukurr Art Centre is a place for local artists to create and display their work for sale. In the early 1900’s the settlement was Roper River Aboriginal Mission, run by the Anglican Church. Most of the senior artists at Ngukurr attended the mission school and have many stories to tell of life in the old mission days.

Location: Ngukurr is 34 km east of Roper Bar and 213 km east of Mataranka, on the Roper Highway (Savannah Way). During The Wet Season, which can spread from December to May, access is by air, or by boat from Roper Bar. As with almost all remote communities in the region, visitors need a permit to enter the community.

Ngukurr Art Centre is a place for local artists to create and display their work for sale. The enterprise is owned and governed by Ngukurr Art Aboriginal Corporation. The Board of Directors are indigenous locals representing seven different clans.

The artists working through Ngukurr Arts are from traditional homelands stretching north to NE Arnhem Land, Central Arnhem Land, south to Tennant Creek, east to the Gulf country and Groote Eylandt, and west to Katherine. This rich diversity of local Aboriginal cultures spanning such a vast area is reflected in one of the most diverse range of styles of Aboriginal arts in any art centre.

Ngukurr Arts produces everything from the most traditional to the new wave of contemporary Aboriginal art. Over the years Ngukurr Arts has been operating the artists have developed their skills, and gained confidence and strength from their stories.

The art style of Ngukurr is as distinctive and varied as the artists. An element common to many of the younger emerging artists is their use of vibrant, bold colour that exudes vibrancy. Cultural stories are painted with passion and enthusiasm, predominantly on canvas, but other mediums include prints, carvings, necklaces and weaving.
