CUE, WESTERN AUSTRALIA


Once a thriving goldmining town, Cue is today one of Australia's most famous ghost towns.
Location: 650 km north-east of Perth
Origin of name
: recalls Tom Cue, who first discovered gold here in 1892 after a drought removed the surface grass to expose alluvial gold everywhere.
Brief history: the town of Cue grew up around the gold diggings. The surface gold was soon removed during the heady days of the gold rush but deep mining continued long after the late 19th century prospectors left.
