New South Wales

Tenterfield Railway Station Museum: The old Tenterfield Railway Station is now an interesting railway museum. 18km from the NSW/Qld border the station it was the last on the Great Northern Railway before reaching the border and Wallangarra station, which is dissected by it. The museum has an interesting collection of rolling stock and railway memorabilia, the most interesting being a turntable that was manufactured in Philadelphia, USA in 1886, a set of rail motor units which ran the rails here, and seven trikes spanning 80 years of railway use.
Location: Railway Avenue, Tenterfield, NSW

South Australia

Steamtown: The Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre is a museum focusing on transportation in a bygone era - particularly the narrow gauge railways of northern SA. What was once known as the Railway Workshops has now become known as the home of Steamtown situated at the western end of the Main Street. Steamtown's collection includes steam and diesel locomotives and numerous passenger carriages.
The depot turntable is the only three gauge example in the world. The Roundhouse is the last major example of its kind in South Australia.
Location: Main Street, Peterborough, SA

Victoria

Australian Railway Historical Society Victoria Museum: has on display the largest collection of Victorian Railways steam locomotives. There are more than 15 different locomotives, ranging from the diminutive F class up to the H class, the largest locomotive to operate in Victoria. Other equipment on display includes electric locomotives, suburban and country passenger carriages, Guards vans and a selection of freight wagons.
The Railway Museum's rolling stock exhibits includes steam, diesel and electric locomotive, steam cranes, freight wagons and passenger carriages. Our other exhibits include photographic displays, signal box and various items of railway equipment. When you visit the Railway Museum in person, you enter through a replica of an 1887 Victorian Railways station building.
Location: Newport Railway Workshops, North Williamstown, Vic.

Queensland

The Workshops Rail Museum: The railway workshops at Ipswich can rightly claim to be the birthplace of rail in Queensland, and it is appropriate that the state's finest rail museum is housed here. The complex is full of hands-on exhibits, multi-media encounters and colourful stories coupled with diesel and steam locomotives and rolling stock that tell the story of 140 years of rail travel in Queensland. There's plenty to see, and special events like steam train rides and model railway exhibitions which are held from time to time turn a visit into a great day out.
Location: North Street, North Ipswich, Qld

Northern Territory

Old Ghan Preservation Society Museum: being a fan of the current Ghan train, not to mention a rail fan from way back, I have been particularly drawn to the numerous relics of the original Ghan railway that can be found along the original round-about route between Adelaide and Darwin. The SA Railway Museum at Port Adelaide has an excellent collection of old Ghan rolling stock and memorabilia around, though this one pips it for me because it runs a fully operational NSU-class Ghan loco. The museum is housed at the old Macdonnell Siding used by the original Ghan, 8 kilometres south of Alice Springs, and it is from here that NSU 64 makes the 30km journey to Ewaninga each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Location: Macdonnell Siding, Norris Bell Ave., Alice Springs, NT

Western Australia

Railway Transport Museum, Bassendean: this museum is Western Australia's premier museum devoted to railway history. The collection is the only such one in Western Australia that aims to tell the story of all railways across the state. Other collections focus on one aspect or a region.
The collection spans the whole spectrum of railway history. From Katie which was placed in service in 1881 when the Fremantle to Guildford Railway was built through to more modern diesel locomotives. Therefore whether you are interested is the heavy freight V class steam locomotives or the tiny 20 inch gauge mine locomotive 'Freudie' there is something to interest you at the museum.
The exhibition building houses an extensive collection of railway artifacts and photographs telling the story of railways in Western Australia.
Location: 136 Railway Parade, Bassendean, WA
