Swan River near Guildford

Barkers Bridge, Guildford

The most recognisable natural feature of the Western Australian capital of Perth is the Swan River, which begins as a tiny stream in the Darling Ranges. The river flows towards the sea, first through the rich and fertile Upper Swan valley, from where it winds its way through the north-eastern suburbs of Perth to enter Perth Water, a lake-like expanse of water alongside Perth's central business district. The river continues through The Narrows, before winding its way towards Fremantle, where it enters the Indian Ocean.

For over 140 years, the Swan River has been a favoured place for family picnics on its banks, rowing and other forms of boating, as well as the main means of transport between Perth and the historic town of Guildford in years gone by.
Beyond Guildford, the river flows through the fertile Middle Swan region of the Swan Valley where Houghtons, one of the most respected wine makers of the Swan Valley and Australia's third oldest winery, was established in 1836.
Over the years, Houghtons evolved to be one of Western Australia's most prominent wine producers and the most awarded, and opened the way for the development of WA's oldest wine region.
A popular way to explore the Swan Valley wine region if coming by car is to follow the award-winning Swan Valley Food and Wine Trail – a 32 kilometre loop taking in more than 150 attractions including wineries, lively breweries, fine restaurants, bustling cafes, distilleries, shops, accommodation and roadside stalls selling fresh local produce.
Another popular way, particularly for visitors to Perth, is via a wine cruise, which incorporates a leisurely trip up the Swan River to Middle Swan. Cruises depart from the ferry jetty at the foot of Barrack Street in central Perth. The ferry then passes under The Causeway for a pick up at Burswood, with another stop at the Swan Valley Visitor Centre near Guildford railway station. Depending on which cruise you take and whether it is a half or full day tour, you will either be served a buffet lunch on board the ferry as it makes its way up the river, or at one of the wineries. Upon arrival at Middle Swan, the tour includes visits to a selection of wineries for wine and food tasting. Many tours include a heritage tour of Houghton Winery and cheese, chocolate, chocolate truffle and/or nougat tasting.
A selection of tours are available to choose from, being offered by a number of operators.
