Getting There

Rail: By reason of its position, and because it is at the centre of the rail network of Great Southern Railways, Adelaide is better served by interstate rail services than any other capital city. GSR, which is based in Adelaide, provides services linking Adelaide to Perth, Darwin, Melbourne and Sydney via some of Australia's most famous trains. All interstate trains operate out of the Adelaide Parklands Terminal, Richmond Road, Keswick, and not from Adelaide's Central station. Parklands is three kilometres from the city centre.
Adelaide is linked by rail to Darwin via a 2979 kilometre railway line. The Ghan passenger train operates on this line and stops at Katherine and Alice Springs. The Ghan runs twice every week in both directions between May and November, with one service a week in each direction at other times.
Perth is linked to Adelaide by the Trans Continental Railway across the Nullarbor Plain. The Indian Pacific is the passenger train which operates on this line. There are two services per week in each direction from August to April; at other times there is one service per week. There are two scheduled stops between Perth and Adelaide - Kalgoorlie and Cook.
The Indian Pacific continues on from Adelaide to Sydney via Broken Hill (a stopover). As with the Adelaide-Perth sector, there are two services per week in each direction from August to April; at other times there is one service per week.
The Overland connects Adelaide with Melbourne. Once an overnight train, The Overland now operates during the day, with three services in each direction every week. Eastbound services (Adelaide to Melbourne) run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; westbound services (Melbourne to Adelaide) run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Air: Australia's main domestic carriers operate daily services between Adelaide and all other capital cities as well as selected larger interstate and Intra-state airports like Alice Springs. Adelaide International Airport has immigration and customs processing facilities.

Road (coach): Numerous operators provide coach services linking Adelaide with Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Darwin. Only the smaller coach and tour operators have scheduled services to Perth.
Premier Stateliner Coach Group provides regular passenger services to most regions in South Australia, with over 180 departures servicing more than 115 towns throughout the state each week. Destinations include Port Augusta, Whyalla and Port Pirie in the Iron Triangle, Port Lincoln and the Eyre Peninsula, Ceduna on the West Coast, Berri, Renmark and Loxton in the Riverland, Kingston, Robe, Millicent, Naracoorte and Mount Gambier in the South East, Victor Harbor and Goolwa on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
LinkSA operates coach services to and through the Barossa Valley, Murray Bridge, Mid Murray and the Adelaide Hills regions.
The main coach terminal in Adelaide is the Central Bus Station at Franklin Street, Adelaide. All interstate and Intra-state coaches depart from and arrive at this terminal.

Road (private motor vehicle): Adelaide is connected to all other capital cities by sealed interstate highways.

Getting Around

Adelaide (both the city centre and the wider suburban area) is laid out in a grid pattern so it is very easy to find your way around on foot in the city centre and by road in the suburbs.

Adelaide Metro provides Adelaide's public transport with a system of buses, trains and the Glenelg tram – all with integrated ticketing. Tickets can be purchased at bus and railway stations and on board trams and buses. Singletrip Tickets have a two-hour limit but allow use of multiple forms of travel within that time period. Tickets for travel after 9am are cheaper than peak hour tickets. Alternatively, a Daytrip ticket covers all day transport on all forms of public transport. All tickets must be validated during each sector of travel.
The Glenelg tram runs between Moseley St (Glenelg) and Victoria Square, Adelaide, departing every 15 minutes Mon – Sat & every 20 mins Sunday.
